Tasting note
Seductive, full, subtle and pure with aromas of ripe cherries, blackcurrants and blackberries, a hint of mint, liquorice, cedarwood, tea, thyme, rose petal, plums and cocoa, Quinta de Vargellas can age beautifully, but can also be drunk young.
Description
The spring of 1995 was exceptionally warm and by mid-April the vines were in full bud. In May the blossom was overwhelming and it became clear that if conditions remained favourable there would be a large harvest. The summer, on the other hand, was quite cool but with very high temperatures in August. Thanks to some rain on 5 and 7 September the grapes reached full ripeness. The harvest at Quinta de Vargellas started on the 13th of the same month, a week later than at most other estates of other port producers in the region. The sugar content of the fruit was found to be higher than ever before. Thanks to the cooler temperatures from the end of September the fermentation proceeded slower than usual, which resulted in a high extraction of fruit aromas and colour.
