Tasting note
The grapes (80% Grenache, 18% Syrah and 2% Mourvèdre) from the 30 to 40 year old vines give the wine candied fruit, spiciness and pepper on the nose. The taste is full and firm and is supported by soft tannins. The wine has a beautiful structure and a full, long-lasting taste.
Description
The Domaine de Cassan was founded in 1929 by an industrialist from Lyon. In 1974, the domaine was purchased by Paul Croset and is now managed by his sons Jean-Charles and Vincent. The 27 ha. large domain (7.5 ha Gigondas, 16.5 ha Beaumes de Venise and 3 ha Côtes de Ventoux) located in a very idyllic location in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, 35 km north of Avignon and 15 km. west of Orange in the Vaucluse department.
The vineyards on the slopes, which are between 6 and 40 years old, are mainly located between Lafare, Beaumes de Venise and Gigondas. The soil is very poor and consists of loam, lime and marl and is covered with boulders. The grapes planted are Grenache (65%), Syrah (20%), Mourvèdre (10%) and Cinsault (5%). The harvest is done by hand and chemicals are avoided as much as possible (“la culture raisonnée”). After destemming, a temperature-controlled fermentation follows. The wine is then transferred to large oak barrels.
