2012 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

Deep ruby red to black in colour. Very fine and complex aromas of blueberries interwoven with discreet scents of resin, balsamic and local wild herbs. The taste of the dark fruit has a surprising freshness, while the firm tannins give both structure and volume. Deliciously juicy finish thanks to the aromas of raspberry and cassis. The 2012 Guimaraens is very fine and beautifully balanced and combines the depth and richness of Quinta do with the Panascal with the intoxicating scents of the Pinhão valley.

Made in the years when a Fonseca Vintage is not declared, Guimaraens Vintage Ports have traditionally been blended from the finest products of the firm's two Pinhão Valley estates, Cruzeiro and Santo António. In recent years, Fonseca's flagship Quinta do Panascal has become an increasingly important component.
The winter was much colder and drier than usual, with only 183.6 mm of rainfall between November and March. However, continued good weather in June and July led to healthy grape development. Green harvest took place a little later than usual. However, grape growth was remarkable for the time of year, ensuring continuous ripening of the crops until harvest. Winemaker David Guimaraens: "The dry winter and cool spring led to low yields and lots of aromatic intensity. The slightly cooler ripening throughout the season added fresh acidity and purity.
