Description
José Antolín, owner of Bodegas Abadía de San Quirce, is a man on a mission: to preserve the traditional wine-growing culture in Ribera del Duero and to pass on unique old vines to future generations. These old plants produce wines with optimal balance, aroma and terroir expression.
Abadía de San Quirce itself owns 21 hectares of vineyards, and it also manages 80 hectares of vineyards owned by local growers, who have often had their plot in the family for generations. All vineyards are planted with Ribera's specialty: tinto fino, or tempranillo. The sticks are between fifteen and more than a hundred years old. They are not tied and stand on their original rootstock (bush vines, or cepas en vaso in Spanish).
Winemaker Diana Moreno Grávalos makes this Roble from the 'youngest' vines in the winery's care. Youngest in quotes, because those are still sticks from fifteen to twenty-five years old; old in the eyes of many producers. They are planted in vineyards at an altitude of about 800 meters, with sandy soils. This ensures enough freshness and elegance.
As the name of the wine suggests, the Roble matures for six months in French and American oak barrels. It produces a beautiful, classic Ribera, which is wonderfully fruity and young, accessible, but also has depth and concentration. With its notes of ripe, jammy fruit and spices, this is a wonderful wine to pair with hearty dishes, such as beans with chorizo or roasted pumpkin.
