Description
The beautifully pure, sweet Moscatel Dorado from Bodegas César Florido is a true asset to our range. Such artisanal fortified wines with such a degree of refinement and character are rarely found in this price range.
The wine is made by César Florido. He bears the same name as his ancestor, who founded the estate in 1887, five generations earlier. It is therefore one of the oldest in Jerez and the oldest in Chipiona, where the bodega is located.
Chipiona is located southwest of Sanlúcar de Barrameda on the coast. The town is known for growing the Muscat grape, which thrives on the sandy soil. However, most of it is sold in bulk – César Florido is one of the few estates that controls the entire process, from cultivation to bottling.
Moscatel Dorado is a true local specialty and the lightest, youngest style of Moscatel the bodega makes. No dried grapes are used and the aging is shorter than for fuller Moscatel styles. As a result, Dorado has mainly fruity and floral notes rather than raisiny or nutty ones.
Cesar makes the Dorado from moscatel de chipiona (aka moscatel de alejandria) and ages it for just one year in a solera system of chestnut barrels. The result is a very clean, elegant dessert wine, with notes of apricot, lime zest, orange blossom, nutmeg and honey.
A wonderful sweet muscat wine to drink on its own, or to pair with savoury (pate, blue cheese) or sweet (crème brûlée, pastries). Once opened, the wine will keep well for several weeks in the fridge.
