Description
In recent years, Juan Antonio Ponce has become one of Spain's avant garde winemakers. With his conscientious, natural, biodynamic working method, he has proven that you can make exceptionally refined wines of international top quality, even in unknown wine regions and from local grape varieties.
This Bobal, Ponce's specialty, is a prime example of this. Juan Antonio harvests the grapes in the high-altitude vineyard La Estrecha, which literally means 'the narrow', referring to the narrow rows. The vines (predominantly bobal and a small percentage of other local white and blue grapes) are more than 75 years old and are planted on granite soil.
After harvest, Ponce ferments the grapes in whole bunches using yeasts present on the grape in large wooden barrels. He then matures the wine for another year in smaller French oak barrels.
Due to the soil type and the slow ripening of the grapes in the La Estrecha vineyard, this wine is distinguished by its refined and intense character. It is a nice balance between La Casilla (the most light-footed and mineral Bobal) and the Pino (the most powerful and concentrated).
With its subtle notes of red fruit, herbs, flowers and minerality plus its modest alcohol content, this is a wonderful wine with refined dishes such as carpaccio or poultry. It is already delicious to drink, but can also mature for up to ten years in the bottle. Highly recommended!
