Description
If anyone has contributed to the renaissance of the wine regions and grape varieties of north-west Spain, it is the distinctive, innovative and idiosyncratic winemaker Raúl Pérez. He makes wines and advises in Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra and Monterrei, among others, but his home base is Bierzo.
Here he was born, in the village of Valtuille de Abajo, and here he also makes his iconic Ultreia series. This Godello is Raúl's 'entry-level' white wine. Although you might think of Valdeorras or Ribeira Sacra when you think of Godello, this almost forgotten grape also produces beautiful wines in Bierzo.
If you ask Raúl, godello can best be compared to chardonnay, especially in terms of texture and freshness. Also, like chardonnay, it can age well in the bottle. According to Raúl, godello shows itself best in the cooler years. Especially in warm years, he is keen to harvest the grapes as soon as they are ripe, to retain as much freshness and tension as possible.
The godello for this white Ultreia comes from different plots in Valtuille and Cacabelos, with predominantly clay soils. After manual harvesting, spontaneous fermentation and maturation in various wooden barrels follow. Raúl stays away from further interventions, such as bâtonnage, addition of sulphites or filtering.
This Godello is also a magnificent, pure terroir wine. Beautifully ripe in terms of fruit, floral and mineral, with a juicy freshness and a good concentration. At its best between two and six years after the harvest, for example with shellfish or a nice fish dish.
