Weingut Clemens with his Fahrlay Terraces
Riesling, Marienburg and biodynamics, these are the three pillars of Weingut Clemens Busch. The domain has been run since 1984 by Clemens and Rita Busch, who now represent the fifth generation. They started with two hectares in the Marienburg vineyard, but have now expanded to sixteen hectares. From their arrival they work according to biodynamic principles, in order to achieve the purest possible expression of grape and terroir.
That terroir is slightly different in every part of the Marienburg vineyard. Each plot is characterized by a unique combination of altitude, exposure, soil and microclimate. To express this diversity, Clemens bottles various plots separately. Rothenpfad is one of those plots.
Already on an old wine list of the Mosel, Rothenpfad is referred to as one of the best parts of the Marienburg. It covers about one hectare, has a south-eastern exposure and a soil consisting mainly of red slate. This is quite rare in the Mosel, but you can also find it in famous vineyards like Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Prälat. Red slate is rich in copper and iron and produces powerful, spicy wines. The sticks are at least 70 years old.
Due to its concentrated, structured, mineral character, the Rothenpfad is pre-eminently a gastronomic wine. Drink it preferably between four and twenty years after the harvest.

Press ref:
JR: 18.5/20 points. The Rothenpfad is a little more generous on the nose than its 'little' brother (sister?) Marienburg with a concentrated fragrance of ripe fruit covering the whole spectrum from local orchards to exotic citrus fruit. On the palate the wine has avoided the sweet pitfalls of 2018 better than most, finding a good balance between zesty orange, herbal freshness and rocky minerality. Still quite compact, but with plenty of promise.

What do we think?: | Jerry: The red slate gives you a wonderfully powerful and spicy wine. The old sticks make it complete. |
