Complex, rich, mineral and with great ageing potential |
Description
Michel Caillot is a Burgundy winemaker of the old school. He has no time for a website, but he has plenty of time for his vineyards and cellar. Michel makes various white and red Burgundies, but Meursault is his absolute specialty.
Michel makes this beautiful village cru from chardonnay grapes harvested in the vineyard La Barre Dessus. This vineyard is located close to the village of Meursault, just a stone's throw from the renowned vineyard Clos de la Barre. Although Domaine Caillot is not officially certified, Michel cultivates his vineyards completely organically.
The cellar of Caillot is deep and cool. This ensures a long, gradual fermentation that takes place with the yeasts naturally present on the grapes. Michel is also in no hurry with the maturation: the wine rests for a year in oak barrels (of which only a small part are new) and another year in stainless steel tanks, or longer if he deems it necessary.
This slow, natural and traditional method produces complex, deep and well-integrated Burgundies with great ageing potential. This is also the case with this magnificent Clos Marguerite. A pure, refined Meursault, with hints of lemon zest and toast, tension and freshness, a salty touch and a long-lasting finish. Very nice!
Drinking at
A magnificent, oak-matured white Burgundy to enjoy with refined dishes such as crab salad, seafood paella, grilled sole with lima beans or young, hard cheeses.
Tasting note
Lemon yellow wine with a complex aroma of candied lemon, peach, brioche, smoky oak and flint. Full and intense in taste with pure citrus fruit and lively fresh acids. The finish is impressively long with notes of butter, toast and grapefruit.
