Spanish House wine
Utiel-Requena is hot and happening. Not surprising, because this small, up-and-coming wine region in the Spanish province of Valencia produces remarkably juicy, fruity and contemporary wines. In addition to the relatively cool, high-altitude vineyards, the region also has a strong local asset, called bobal.
This blue grape is deeply colored and naturally has a characteristic freshness. That makes it perfect for the southern Spanish climate. It is warm enough for the grape to ripen properly, while the fresh acidity ensures that the wine does not become unwieldy or jammy.
This supple, seductive Elvia Crianza consists of predominantly bobal, supplemented with tempranillo. Winemaker Luis Miguel Calleja ferments both grape varieties separately, then blends the wines and allows the resulting blend to mature for another nine to 12 months in American oak barrels.
The result is a creamy, smooth Spanish red wine, with notes of black and red fruit and a touch of toast and spiciness from the wood aging. It is accessible enough to drink as it is, but also delicious with pasta dishes, roasted chicken or semi-hard cheeses. It also tastes a lot more luxurious than the price suggests! An ideal house wine, and organic too.
