Bright red in colour, finely spicy, slightly smoky and floral in scent. The taste structure is smooth and ends with slightly spicy tannins in the aftertaste.
Description
There is a special story behind the creation of the Terre de Feu in 2003. The summer that year was exceptionally warm and dry. When processing the grapes, it turned out that the Grenache had benefited enormously from this. From that moment on, François and Anne decided to bottle their most beautiful parcel of Grenache, with fifty-year-old vines, separately.
The plot is located on a steep hill, with a southern exposure. The soil consists of clay covered with galets, the famous flat round stones that you also find in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Where the stones release heat stored at night and thus help with maturation, the clay provides sufficient coolness and moisture in hot and dry years.
The small, concentrated grapes are harvested by hand. For optimal balance, a very small amount of Syrah and Carignan from old vines is added to the assembly. The wine is partly aged in wood: about half is aged in used wooden barrels. François and Anne are not so much interested in an emphatic wood taste, but mainly for some extra complexity.
The result is a beautifully expressive, classic Grenache, with notes of red fruit and cocoa. A delicious wine with a variety of dishes, ranging from duck to spicy blue cheese. The Terre de Feu is already nice to drink, but can also be kept for a few more years.
