Bodegas Vivanco
Beautiful, complex Rioja, full red in color, refined scent with ripe fruit notes, dosed oak and a light spiciness. The taste is full, round and balanced and ends with mild tannins.
Reserva 2014, Rioja
This then goes, without the harmful pumping but with the help of gravity, to large barrels of French oak. After fermentation, the Reserva matures for another 24 months in a mix of French and American oak. Once bottled, the wine rests in the cellars for another 24 months before Vivanco sells the wine.
A beautiful red Rioja: refined and complex, but also very accessible in taste. Fantastic wine, highly regarded by several wine writers.
Vivanco: top producer of refined Rioja with French influences
English wine writer Tim Atkin places Rafael Vivanco high in the top 10 of modern winemakers in Rioja. Rafael, one of the two sons of founder Pedro Vivanco, is reluctant to use new oak and seeks vineyard and grape expression.
It harvests when the skin is perfectly ripe and thus contains silky tannins. Rafael learned the modern way of making wine in Bordeaux, where he studied oenology and gained practical experience. He applies that knowledge in his new bodega, where he makes beautiful wines using a sophisticated mix of classic and modern techniques.

The Wine Advocate - October 2020: 91/100 points | It has good balance
Description
The 2014 Reserva has a more modern profile and more forward fruit despite its relatively long élevage. It's a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano from Briones, fermented separately in small French oak vats and matured in new and second use French and American barriques for 24 months. It's quite smoky and balsamic, with integrated oak but still showing some toasted notes and ripe fruit without excess, a mixture of red and black berries. It has good balance and a medium-bodied clean palate, with some faint leathery sensation.

Description
Back after a break in the rain-affected 2013 vintage, the Vivanco Reserva is an eminently drinkable assemblage of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano, aged in a combination of mostly French and American oak, with aromatic vanilla and cinnamon spicy, red berry fruit, a hint of the farmyard and racy acidity. 2020-23

Tim Atkin MW - Special Report Rioja 2019: 92/100 points | An elegant interpretation of the year
Description
Like the 2011 - the first of two back-to-back warm vintages in Rioja, this 2012 has 10% Graciano to provide acidity and freshness. It's an elegant interpretation of the year, with well-integrated French oak, some clove spice and refined tannins.
