Valley Chardonnay
A unique Chardonnay, with intense, ripe fruit, tension and liveliness, a powerful yet refined structure and unprecedented finesse. You can taste the cool, maritime influences in the vineyard in the fresh acidity, the flawless fruit and the salty minerality of the Trout Gulch. A dream wine to enjoy at least for the next ten years.
Jamie Kutch with his Single Vineyards
This unparalleled single vineyard is one of the very best Chardonnays in California. It is made by Jamie Kutch, a relative newcomer to California wine. In less than ten years, this former Wall Street trader and huge wine fanatic has established himself as one of Sonoma's big names for world-class Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.
Kutch is distinguished by a style that combines the ripe fruit intensity so typical of California with the finesse that characterizes Burgundy premier and grand crus. His winemaking policy consists of working with top quality grapes, minimal intervention in the cellar and maximum terroir expression.
The chardonnay grapes for this Trout Gulch come from the cool vineyard of the same name in the Santa Cruz Mountains, less than six kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. The grapes are grown organically and only harvested in October. With its special terroir, this vineyard, planted over forty years ago, is considered one of the grand cru's of California.
Once arrived in the small cellar, Jamie squeezes the grapes with stems and all. Using gravity, he directs the juice into neutral oak barrels, where he allows the fermentation to proceed with the help of grape yeasts. He then ripens the wine for twelve months in the same used barrels on the yeasts. After another six months of rest in stainless steel tanks, the wine is bottled.
