From visionary winemaker Raúl Pérez
From La Vitoriana, the most beautiful cru of Valtuille
Young beautiful with grilled meat, matured perfectly with game |
Mencia & Bastardo
Deep red in color, refined in scent with floral nuances, herbs, flint and some oak. The elegant taste structure ends aromatically with mild tannins. Complex red wine, drunk young, excellent with spicy lamb or beef; delicious with game after a few years.
Raul perez with his beautiful wines from Bierzo
If anyone has put Bierzo's unique terroir on the map, it's Raúl Pérez. In his native village of Valtuille de Abajo, he also makes this beautiful series La Vizcaína in addition to his iconic Ultreia series. These are the bottlings of the crus around Valtuille, each one from at least 50 year old sticks.
La Vitoriana is considered the most beautiful cru of Valtuille. The vineyard was planted in 1890 and has a total of about four hectares, of which 1.8 is owned by Raúl. La Vitoriana has a compact clay soil and is mainly planted with mencia and bastardo plus a mix of garnacha tintorera, doña blanco and palomino.
The vinification process is broadly the same for all wines from the La Vizcaína series. After the harvest, fermentation takes place with whole bunches of grapes in oak barrels. Characteristic is the fairly long skin maceration that Raúl gives the wine afterwards, about sixty to ninety days. After this, the wine matures for another year in used wooden barrels. Bottling takes place without filtration or clarification.
The end result is difficult to put into words. Pure, intense, powerful and gossamer at the same time. A truly wonderful Mencia blend that you absolutely must experience. Drink it between two and ten years after harvest, preferably with a nice meat or game dish.
