100% Chardonnay from the top wine growing in the world
Paolo de Marchi, the winemaker of the renowned Chianti Classico estate Isole e Olena, owes its reputation to his unparalleled expertise in the field of Sangiovese. Logical, because this is the most important grape for the Chianti Classico and even the only one for its world-famous Cepparello (its Chianti Classico Riserva made from 100% sangiovese).
However, you can also entrust a Burgundy grape to Paolo with confidence. He started his chardonnay project in the late 1980s and planted five different chardonnay clones from Burgundy. In the meantime, Chardonnay has grown into a true cult wine, which is made in small editions and is sold out in no time.
After the harvest, the wine ferments in barriques, one third of the casks are new. The Chardonnay then ripens in the same barrels for ten to twelve months on the yeasts. Batonnage (the stirring of the yeasts) takes place once in a while, just as happens in Burgundy.
If we had to describe Paolo's style briefly, we would do so with the terms finesse and balance. That definitely also applies to his Chardonnay. Nicely dosed oak, ripe fruit, refined minerality, pleasant fresh acidity and an impressive aftertaste. Drink this wine easily up to ten years after harvest.
PRESS REF: The Wine Advocate: 95/100 points
The Isole e Olena 2018 Chardonnay Collezione Privata is a finely chiseled and precise expression. The wine benefits from cooler pre-harvest nighttime temperatures that have pushed aromas of apricot, waxy orchard fruit and sweet pear. This is a full-bodied white that remains remarkably light on its feet and lithe in character. This vintage achieves truly remarkable balance, and I don't say that lightly. Luscious primary fruit and toast are measured against the wine's racy acidity and its chalky finish. This is one of the best Chardonnays to be found in Tuscany. - (2018 crop) Monica Larner, September 2020
