From Bierzo pioneer and top winemaker Raúl Pérez
The most ripe and full La Vizcaína
Nice with grilled meat or spicy stews |
Mencia, bastardo & Garnacha Tintora
Deep red in color with some development; powerful scent with ripe red fruit, spices and nuances of leather. The taste structure is full, powerful and balanced with mild tannins and a lingering aromatic aftertaste. Complex wine, beautiful with rich dishes of beef or game on spicy dishes.
The uniqueness of Bierzo
Striking, idiosyncratic winemaker Raúl Pérez enjoys worldwide cult status for his intuitive and minimalist view of winemaking, plus his pioneering work in his native Bierzo region. Raúl was in fact one of the first to express the unique terroir of Bierzo in his wines.
He does this in this special series La Vizcaína: each and every one of them impressive terroir wines from at least 50 years old vines from crus around the village of Valtuille de Abajo. In La Poulosa vineyard, planted in 1940, Raúl owns two hectares of mencia, bastardo and garnacha tintorera grapes. Although not certified, Raúl farms the vineyards organically.
Since Raúl's main aim is to express the grapes and their terroir, he keeps the interventions in the cellar to a minimum. After fermentation (largely with whole bunches) and a long soaking of the skins, the wine matures for a year in used French oak barrels. He bottles La Poulosa without clarification or filtering
In the bottle you will find a pure, authentic Bierzo bursting with red fruit, spiciness and minerality. La Poulosa is the warmest cru, for that reason this La Vizcaína is also the most mature and round of the four and relatively young accessible. Preferably drink it at the table, for example with a spicy stew or grilled meat.
