definition
Sandwiched between the borders with Portugal and the Basque Country is the green Spanish wine region of Galicia. The cool, humid Atlantic climate doesn't always make it easy for winemakers, but maybe that's why the wines are so interesting. Take this pure and refined red Ribeiro from expert Luis Anxo.
Anxo has been based in Ribeiro's sub-region of Arnoia since 1988 and has been producing white and red terroir wines from traditional, local grape varieties that were on the brink of oblivion ever since. This red A Torna dos Pasás is a blend of brancellao, caíño longo, ferrol and caíño redondo, which Luis harvests manually in various minuscule plots with granite bottoms.
In the cellar – where his grandfather also made wine – Anxo keeps it simple. He lets the juice ferment spontaneously with the help of grape yeasts, ages the resulting wine for a year in used barrels and bottles without filtering and clarification to preserve as much flavor as possible.
The result is this particularly elegant red wine, which is as complex and deep as it is subtle and refined. It has pure fruit, a clear savory profile and a lively freshness. For lovers of youthful and juicy, this Ribeiro is already delicious, but a few years of bottle aging give it an extra dimension. Out of the ordinary!
