Description
The classic Avignonesi is one of the great names of Italy. With the arrival of Belgian-born Virginie Saverys, who took over the winery in 2009, a new wind is blowing on the domain. She puts a strong emphasis on quality, as she believes that Montepulciano is an often overlooked Tuscan appellation mistakenly.
She is now joined by her young and talented daughter, Eline Aloy. At 26 she opened a wine bar in Antwerp. In the meantime, she regularly visited Montepulciano, where she could not resist the temptation to make her own first wines. And so Ventisei (Italian for twenty-six) was born.
The Vino Nobile Eline makes mainly from sangiovese with a little bit of merlot and cabernet sauvignon, from various biologically processed plots. The grapes from these plots ferment and ripen separately for optimal terroir expression. Only after maturing does she blend the different barrels.
The result is a pure, elegant and harmonious Vino Nobile, with notes of cherries, berries and spices and a juicy, silky taste. Eline herself compares the wine with 'The Kiss' by Gustav Klimt and 'Go breaking my heart' by Elton John. Whether the wine indeed evokes these associations, we leave to you to judge. However, we can be unanimous about the quality. It is fantastic in this price range.
Drink at
Juicy, slightly spicy red wine that goes well with several Italian classics, such as gnocchi with braised lamb, ossobuco or linguine with spinach, pumpkin and ricotta.
Tasting note
Light ruby red wine with a refined scent of red cherry, plum, cloves and juniper. The style is elegant with uplifting acidity and fine tannins. Lingering finish with nuances of toast and pepper.
Shelf life
At its best between 5 and 10 years after harvest.
