Description
Château Tronquoy-Lalande is a beautiful 18th-century domain in the heart of Saint-Estèphe. Historically, it is considered one of the top terroirs of the appellation. After a period of decline, the domain was taken over in 2006 by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who had also taken over the world-famous and nearby Château Montrose (2nd Grand Cru Classé) a few months earlier.
Instead of annexing Tronquoy-Lalande to Montrose, the duo decided to restore this legendary winery to its full glory. The old vineyards were renovated and replanted to the current 30 hectares. The cellar has also been completely renovated and in terms of equipment is not inferior to that of a Grand Cru Classé. On purpose, because although the domain does not belong to the Cru Classés of 1855, the wine is made that way.
Taste this impressive Saint-Estèphe. It is made from merlot (51%), cabernet sauvignon (44%), petit verdot (3%) and cabernet franc (2%). The relatively high proportion of merlot has to do with the soil, which contains pebbles but also quite a bit of clay. Thanks to the low yields, the grapes are particularly concentrated.
Combined with the luxurious aging in French oak barriques, this produces an impressive, powerful left bank Bordeaux, with silky tannins, an endless finish and enormous aging potential.
