Chardonnay and weissburgunder from Erste Lage vineyards
By Burgundian specialist Thörle
Refined and creamy, with beautiful oak and lots of length |
Description
Johannes and Christoph Thörle have developed over the years into real Burgundian specialists. They excel at making wines from spätburgunder, grauburgunder, weissburgunder and even chardonnay. The brothers prove that they are not inferior to Burgundy producers with this beautiful premier cru Kalk & Kreide.
The wine is made from chardonnay and weissburgunder (pinot blanc). The grapes come from Erste Lage vineyards in Saulheim with calcareous soils - hence the name of the wine. The brothers harvest the grapes by hand in multiple picking sessions to guarantee optimal ripeness.
A classic, Burgundian working method follows in the cellar. After a short soaking of the skins for extra aroma intensity, the grapes ferment spontaneously. The wine then matures for about ten months with the yeasts, which are stirred once a month (bâtonnage) for extra filling and creaminess. Finally, the wine matures until bottling in wooden barrels of French and German oak, of which 30% are new.
The brothers have managed to create an impressive white wine that rivals many Burgundies - once again at this price level. The Kalk & Kreide is rich, complex and wood-type, but also fresh and refined. Beautiful, now and for years to come!
Drink with
Impressive, complex white wine to drink with refined dishes, such as pasta or paella with seafood, grilled sole with lima beans or fish curry.
Tasting note
Particularly refined white wine with a delicate scent of candied lemon, lime, apple, vanilla and flint. Intensely juicy and at the same time lively fresh with pure fruit in the taste. The aftertaste is broad with chalk-dry nuances
