Description
Bordeaux and Douro expert Christian Seely is convinced that the Douro can produce wines that deserve a place among the world's great wines in terms of quality and storage potential. In his opinion, the Douro definitely belongs in the list of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône and Piedmont. And he should know, because in addition to Seely managing Quinta da Romaneira, he is also at the helm of Château Pichon Baron in Bordeaux and that other Douro reference, Quinta do Noval.
At Quinta da Romaneira, Seely and winemaker Carlos Agrellos have the very best terroir. Their 86 hectares of steep terraced vineyards stretch for no less than three kilometers along the majestic Douro River. The vineyards are all qualified as class A, the highest possible classification in the Douro.
Here the duo harvests the touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz and tinto cão, which together form the assemblage for the Dona Clara. After picking, the grapes ferment in stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks. Once fermented, the wine matures for ten months in wooden barrels, a small part of which are new French oak.
The result is a beautiful, modern red Douro with pure fruit and beautiful oak. It is smooth and mouth-filling, with notes of dark fruit, spices, cocoa and oak. An intense, seductive wine, which is delicious now and can easily be kept for ten years.
