Description
Kellerei Eisacktal may have a reputation primarily for its crystal-clear white mountain wines, but the cantina also produces some special, refined red wines in the Eisacktal in Alto Adige. For example, this characterful Lagrein, made from the local grape variety of the same name, which is related to Pinot Noir and Syrah.
The grapes are harvested in vineyards at an altitude of 250 to 400 metres. Thanks to the relatively warm, gravelly soils, the Lagrein can ripen perfectly here while retaining its fresh acidity.
Once harvested, skin maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks follow. Then winemaker Hannes Munter lets the wine mature on the yeasts in large wooden barrels.
The result is a striking red wine, with an expressive scent of berry fruit, violets, cocoa and spices. The taste is fresh, juicy and intense, with fine tannins. Perfect with a plate of Italian cold cuts, porchetta or veal cheek.
