From the legendary Mount Langi Ghiran
From the relatively cool Grampians sub-region
Not inferior to an elegant Côte Rôtie |
Description
Although Mount Langi Ghiran makes wines from different grape varieties, shiraz is their undisputed specialty. The winery owes its reputation to the Langi Shiraz. This wine has been considered one of Australia's iconic Shiraz hogs since it appeared out of nowhere on the cover of Wine Spectator in 1996 – alongside legends Henschke Mount Edelstone and Penfolds Grange.
The Cliff Edge is the little brother and - for about a quarter of the price - an unprecedented masterpiece. The shiraz grapes – two different clones to be precise – are harvested from different plots of Mount Langi's historic vineyard in The Grampians. The relatively cool climate and poor granite soils leave a clear mark on the style of the wine, which is more like Northern Rhône than much Australian Shiraz.
Once picked, the grapes ferment spontaneously. After pressing, the wine matures for fourteen months in French oak barriques, about a third of which are new. The result is a superior Shiraz that effortlessly combines finesse, intensity and flexibility.
It smells seductively of blackberry, plum, violet, pepper and cedar and is full and smooth in taste, with a balanced freshness and a long aftertaste. Think elegant Côte Rôtie, but from Australia. A wine not to be missed!
Drink with
Particularly beautiful, oak-matured red wine to combine with spicy dishes. Perfect with exotically spiced (meat) dishes from the barbecue or grill, stew with stew or aged, hard cheeses.
Tasting note
Deep ruby red wine with a seductive scent of ripe blackberry, plum, vanilla, pepper and laurel. Full and smooth in taste with jammy dark fruit, polished tannins and beautiful freshness. The aftertaste is long and refined with notes of cedar and spices.
Shelf life
Now beautiful and easy to keep for up to 10 years after harvest.
