Badsberg Wine Cellar in South Africa's Breedekloof Valley is an expert in making fortified wines. The specialty of the house is this Red Muscadel.
Red Muscadel is a special fortified, sweet wine made from the white Muscat grape (muscat blanc à petits grains to be precise). The grapes are harvested so late that they have already partly dried on the vines. This not only gives the wine its characteristic honey-like taste, but also causes the skins to turn brown.
Once harvested, the grapes are crushed and the skins are soaked for as long as possible, which gives the wine its tawny color. Characteristic of this fortified wine is that the brandy is not added halfway, but at the very beginning of the fermentation process. This makes the style distinctly sweet and concentrated, with notes of raisins and honey.
The Red Muscadel is therefore a perfect partner for sweet desserts or spicy blue cheese. Drink it well chilled for an optimal taste experience.
