Burgundy Chardonnay
Full yellow in color and a beautiful, complex aroma of overripe yellow fruit, butter and slightly caramel. The taste has a powerful, fresh flavor and develops in a balanced manner. The aftertaste is long and aromatic, with ripe yellow fruit and toasty nuances.
Saint Véran & Pouilly Fuisse
Jacques and Nathalie Saumaize make beautiful white Burgundy in the famous Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran appellations. Their 13 hectares of vineyards are located on the slope of the impressive Rock of Vergisson, which dominates the southern part of Burgundy.
They have been working organically for years, but their thirty-year-old son Anthony is taking further steps. Since 2018, the family has started using biodynamics on his initiative. This means even more precise attention in the vineyards and cellars – precisely the power of small-scale wine production.
Specialist Saumaize logically cannot compete on price with much larger wine companies, but leaves them far behind on quality. The lack of overhead and marketing costs (they do virtually nothing about that) also cushions the difference in production costs. You can taste the high quality in the always limited availability, beautiful white Pouilly-Fuissé Sur La Roche.
This Pouilly comes from a small plot with very calcareous soil. The chardonnay vines are 50 years old. It produces a beautiful white Burgundy, with beautiful, complex aromas and a powerful, yet refined, long-lasting taste. Sur la Roche will receive premier cru status with effect from the 2020 harvest. A rightful recognition for this top terroir.
Awards
Mention
Jancis Robinson - January 2020: 16/20 points | Attractive style
Description
Very chalk-led nose, oodles of acidity and ripe opulent sweet fruit too, just a hint of tinned pineapple. Nicely put together and attractive style.
Mention
Tim Atkin MW - Special Report 2018 Burgundy: 92/100 points
Mention
The Wine Advocate - August 2019: 92/100 points | Ripe acids, good depth and tension
Description
Bursting from the glass with aromas of orange zest, citrus blossom, beeswax and warm bread, the 2017 Pouilly-Fuissé Sur La Roche is medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, with ripe acids, good depth and tension at the core and persuasive grip on the finish that suggests it will reward at least a few years' bottle age.
