Description
Ridge Vineyards is one of the icons of California wine culture. The domain owes its reputation to exceptional quality single vineyard cabernet and zinfandel. The first and most famous wine is Monte Bello: a 100% cabernet sauvignon from the vineyard of the same name, first made in 1962.
The Geyserville is also one of the historic wines of the domain: it has been made since 1966. The grapes come from the vineyard of the same name, where the first vines were planted in 1882. There are no fewer than 23 different grapes. Zinfandel is the most important, supplemented with grapes such as carignan, petite sirah, mataro and alicante bouschet. The blend of the wine is therefore different every year.
To let the quality of the vineyards and grapes speak as much as possible, winemaker Eric Baugher works according to the principle of 'pre-industrial winemaking'. By this he means a non-interventionist way of making wine, inspired by the nineteenth century. At Ridge no made, embellished industrial wines, but classic terroir and harvest year type wines.
Thus, Ridge wines are distinguished from many American wines by their elegance, subtlety and complexity. This certainly also applies to the Geyserville, which is round and soft due to the sultry ripe fruit and the beautifully dosed wood maturation, but also lively and energetic thanks to the fresh acidity. Drink this wine preferably with a meal, between five and fifteen years after the harvest.
