White wine from Puglia

Fresh dry white wine from Italy with the scent of fine yellow fruit and something toasty. The taste is smooth, pleasant and persistent. Very tasty with fish pasta and salads.

Description

The southern Italian region of Apulia is best known for the excellent value for money of its red wines. But in recent years there has also been a lot of experimentation with the planting of white grapes. One problem, however, is the fairly high summer temperature in Apulia, which makes the grapes easy to overripe and therefore retain little acid.

This applies in particular to the chardonnay, which many growers in Apulia consider the ideal grape despite this disadvantage. The dynamic cooperative Vecchia Torre from the town of Leverano thinks differently and in 2006 planted vermentino on a grape variety that can withstand heat well.

The small vineyard of less than ten hectares is located between two hills, which means there is almost a constant cooling wind. This means the temperature is lower and the vermentino retains the desired fresh taste and fruitiness. In addition, significant investments have been made in equipment that cools the tanks with white wine sustainably powered by electricity from solar panels.

Vecchia Torre also limits the yield in the vineyard, which gives the wine a special quality. This small-scale produced white wine has been very successful since its introduction and tastes significantly more exclusive than the price suggests.
