Description

The organic wines of Le Clos du Caillou are of exceptional class and refinement. Bruno Gaspard and owner Sylvie Vacheron know how to bring a rare elegance to the wines despite the warm Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir. They create a style and quality that is seen by many as the future for this famous area. Here people have become accustomed to harvesting overly ripe Grenache grapes, which produce very alcoholic and heavy wines.

A style that is under heavy fire and is vastly different from Le Bouquet des Garrigues of this domain. The vineyards of these luxurious côtes du rhône are located next to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, only separated by the Route Nationale. The plantings are dominated by mainly 50-year-old Grenache vines, with an additional 15% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Mourvèdre. The yield is very low at an average of 25 hectoliters per hectare.

The harvest is done manually with a first selection in the vineyard, followed by a second upon arrival in the cellar. Bruno Gaspard selects only the very best grapes for Le Bouquet des Garrigues and lets them ferment in concrete vats. The maturation takes place for 15 months in large oak barrels. The result is a much-acclaimed côtes du rhône that deserves to be compared to good châteauneuf-du-pape.
