Tasting note Michel Gassier Nostre Pais
Description
In the beautiful and creamy Nostre Païs you will find no less than five different specific southern French grape varieties: grenache, carignan, mourvèdre, cinsault and syrah. According to owner Michel Gassier, his red wine offers a characteristic terroir expression due to the low yield in the vineyard and the optimal ripeness of the grape. Consultant and winemaker Philippe Cambie, with nicknames such as 'the Pope of Châteauneuf' and 'monsieur grenache', has left his mark on this magnificent Rhone wine.
A small part of the wine matures in oak barrels and the wine is bottled unfiltered. We don't make the comparison quickly, but we write this with full conviction: the red Nostre Païs competes with a refined châteauneuf-du-pape! In a word: great. Gassier makes masterful copies for a fraction of the price.
The vineyard of Nostre Païs has several similarities with those of the famous greats: the large boulders, the grape varieties and the poor soil. The microclimate differs slightly, with cooler nights in particular, so that the grapes retain a little more freshness. Highly recommended!
Châteauneuf-du-pape is now one of the best wines in France for enthusiasts worldwide. You can tell by the price: a bottle of top quality now costs at least thirty euros. But luckily we have affordable alternatives from the same region for you, such as the costières de nîmes by the talented Michel Gassier. He works closely with Philippe Cambie, one of the best-known advisers to leading châteauneuf-du-pape producers such as Le Clos du Caillou.
