Description
The elegant and refined wines of Vargellas are notable for their complex fruit, their characteristic fragrant quality and their well-integrated sinewy tannins. These are most evident in the Single Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Ports, but of course also as part of the classic Taylor Vintage Ports where the best wines of Vargellas are blended with those of Quinta de Terra Feita and, in recent years, Quinta do Junco.
However, the wine that represents the quintessence of the Vargellas terroir is the rare Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha Vintage Port, which is made from the very small quantities of grapes from the oldest vines on the property.
The original part of Quinta de Vargellas consists of the north-facing amphitheatre of terraced vineyards high above the Douro River, with the house and winery at its centre. On the steep slopes to the west of the winery rise the stone walls of the oldest terraces, which form part of the 'Vinha Velha' or 'Old Vineyard'.
