Tasting note Costers del Priorat Pissarres
Full red wine with a pleasant spicy aroma of spices, red fruit and a nuance of oak. The taste structure is full and round, with soft tannins and a fresh aftertaste.
Description
Josep Mas Barberà is a newcomer to the wine world. He started in 2008 at Costers del Priorat, a small bodega that was created in 2002 by merging two vineyards.
Josep now has a good reputation as a winemaker and he is known as an advocate of a fresh, relatively elegant style priorat, wine from the top quality region of Catalonia. Josep is invariably one of the first to bring in the grapes and want to avoid any kind of overripeness.
With its exceptional conditions of lots of sun and little rainfall, Priorat is undoubtedly one of the most attractive wine regions in Spain. The vines are planted on steep slopes by means of terrace construction. Because of this, almost all the work has to be done by hand.
Priorat of this level is traditionally made and offers a great contrast to the industrial method in many other wine regions. The yields of the forty to one hundred year old vines Grenache and Carignan are extremely low.
This powerful, full-bodied red wine is aged for about twelve months in French oak casks of 300 and 500 liters. Quality wines here are not cheap, but have a unique terroir expression of Grenache and Carignan. Highly recommended.
