Domaine Le Clos du Caillou
Le Clos du Caillou in the Rhône is known worldwide for its beautiful Châteauneuf-du-Pape. However, the estate's vineyards do not officially fall within the AOC. This has everything to do with the willfulness of the first owner: in 1936 he did not want to allow the experts who came to assess his company on his property. And so Sylvie Vacheron, the current owner, has a company that shares, but does not belong to, the terroir of the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
Sylvie's father, Claude Pouizin, bought Le Clos du Caillou in 1956. The work was then purely focused on grape growing and the entire harvest went to the cooperative. It was not until 1993 that wine was made again for the first time. In 1995, Sylvie and her (now deceased) husband took over the domain and started a whole series of innovations.
Together with winemaker Bruno Gaspard, Sylvie now manages the domain, which owns 44 hectares of vineyards in the Côtes du Rhône and 9 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The entire company is certified organic. Grapes are also planted that traditionally thrive in the warmth of the Rhone region, such as grenache, syrah and (for white) roussanne. Wine is made with a gentle hand, which is smooth, round and, above all, silky.
