Description
California's Monterey county is best known for its extensive agriculture. Grapes also do particularly well in this famous "Salad Bowl" of the world. Closer to the coast, the conditions are cooler and you will mainly find chardonnay and pinot noir, more inland later ripening grapes such as merlot and cabernet do very well.
Granite Coast Vineyards is one of the pioneers here and has vineyards in both the cooler, northern coastal region and the slightly warmer, southern areas. They harvest the sustainably grown cabernet sauvignon from the latter for this beautiful Equoia.
The conditions here are perfect for grapes of optimum quality: the warm, sunny days ensure ripeness and the ocean is just close enough to ensure that the grapes retain their fresh acidity thanks to the coolness.
Once harvested, the grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels. It produces a full, smooth Cabernet, with a nice balance between ripeness and freshness and notes of dark forest fruit, bay leaf, cocoa and oak. Great with a good (vegan) burger, but also delicious with burritos, a steak or spicy, hard cheeses.
Drink at
Full, oak-aged red wine to combine with various dishes. Nice with hamburger bun, marinated spare ribs, tortilla wrap with bell pepper and tomato salsa or spicy, hard cheeses.
Tasting note
Deep ruby red wine with fragrant aromas of black currant, plum, bay leaf, mint and smoky oak. The taste is full and smooth with ripe dark forest fruit, balanced acidity and firm tannins. Sultry finale with notes of nuts and cocoa.

At its best between 3 and 8 years after harvest date.
