Malbec (South West France, Bordeaux, Loire, Argentina, Chile)
Generally dark wines with a lot of tannins. The grape for the Cahors where it is called Auxerrois. In the Loire it bears the name Côt. Planted in Argentina in 1868 where it is called the national grape.
Recognizable aromas: red fruit (raspberry, elderberry, strawberries, red cherry); black fruits (blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, black currant); dried fruit (plum, fruit jam); spices (pepper, cloves, vanilla, liquorice, tobacco); herbs (mint, thyme, sage); animal (leather, game); wood (vanilla, saltwood, oak, cigar box); roasted (caramel, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, smoked).
