Merlot (Bordeaux mainly right bank, rest of the world) .
The most commonly planted grape variety in Bordeaux. Merlot ripens earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon and has less tannin and slightly more sugar. The grape produces wines with a round, full flavor and a berry flavor
Recognizable aromas: black fruit (blackberry, blueberry, black cherry); red fruits (red currant, elderberry, cherry); dried fruits (plum, raisin, dates, fig); earthy (earth, forest, wet leaves, moss, autumn, truffle, mushrooms) spices (liquorice, tobacco), animal (leather, game, musk); wood (cedar wood, vanilla, cigar box, liquorice).
