Sangiovese (Italy, including Tuscany, USA, Australia, South America)
Main blue grape in Italy. There are many different sub-varieties and clones of the Sangiovese, resulting in many wine types. The grape has relatively little color. Characteristic is a considerable acidity and a deep red color. Forms the basis of many Italian wines, including Chianti.
Recognizable aromas : red fruit (red cherry, raspberry, elderberry); black fruits (blackberry, black cherry); floral (violets); earthy (wet leaves, moss, autumn, soil, forest); herbs (sage, basil, rosemary, oregano); animal (leather, game); roasted (coffee, cocoa, chocolate, smoked); wood (vanilla, oak, liquorice)
