Tempranillo (Spain: Rioja, Ribera del Duero ao Spanish regions, Portugal, Australia, Argentina)
The Tempranillo has a thick shell that protects it from rotting caused by moisture. The wines from this are excellent for barrel aging, because the Tempranillo is resistant to oxidation. The grape is mixed in the Rioja to supplement its relatively low acidity and alcohol content.
Recognizable aromas: red fruit (strawberries, red cherry); black fruits (blackberry, black cherry, black currant); dried fruits (plum, dates, fig); earthy (earth, forest, wet leaves); spices (bay leaf, licorice, tobacco, nutmeg, vanilla); spices (oregano, sage, anise) wood (vanilla, saltwood, oak, cigar box); roasted (caramel, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, smoked).
