Description
Jaco and Cerina van Niekerk are pioneers in Piekenierskloof. Like no other, they see the potential of this somewhat forgotten wine region with its high-altitude vineyards and old, non-irrigated bush vines, sandwiched between Swartland and Cederberg. We found the couple willing to develop the New Trek range in an exclusive partnership with us.
A favorite of the series is this beautiful Shiraz. Jaco and Cerina harvest the grapes in Swartland and Piekenierskloof. The latter region in particular is extremely suitable for Rhône grapes such as Shiraz and Grenache. The high altitude of the vineyards ensures warm days, but cool nights. This allows the shiraz grapes to ripen nicely and at the same time retain their fruity aromas and fresh acidity.
After the grapes have been harvested by hand, they are crushed and a short skin soaking follows for more aroma and color. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, at a relatively low temperature to preserve as much of the fresh fruit aromas as possible. Then Jaco and Cerina transfer a third of the wine to neutral oak barrels. After twelve months of maturation, it is bottled.
The end result is a very successful Shiraz. You can taste the freshness and pepperiness that you also find in Syrahs from the Northern Rhône, but also the ripe fruit and spiciness associated with a warmer climate. For example, drink it in combination with roast poultry or roasted red meat. We can warmly recommend a second bottle on hand!
Drink at
Nice wine to drink on its own, or to combine with dishes with lamb, poultry (quail, guinea fowl) or old, hard cheeses.
Tasting note
Deep red colored wine with a refined scent of ripe blackberry, blueberry, laurel and oak nuances. Full, smooth and soft in taste with a nice balance between ripe fruit, fresh acidity and mild tannins. Beautifully typed and wonderfully drinkable.
