White wines from the 'Old World' to the 'New World'. From the Bourgogne region to the Marlborough in New Zealand, known for the popular Sauvignon Blanc. Grape varieties from Albarino to Viognier.

White wine can be made from both white and blue grapes. This is because white wine is only made from the juice of the grapes. The must is free from seeds, stems and peels. Because the juice of both white and blue grapes is white, only white wine can be made from it. The wine is of course not 'white' but is a collective name. The grape variety used ultimately determines the color. In addition, the age of the wine partly determines the color. The color of the wine can vary considerably. A young wine more often has a greenish color while older wines show much more dark yellow or even orange or brown.

Sauvignon Blanc

The modern wine drinker is often looking for a wine that offers them instant freshness and fruit, rather than a very subtle wine that has storage potential. A Sauvignon Blanc wine is ideal for them. The most important characteristic of the grape is its pungent and instantly recognizable aroma. What is special is that the different stages of ripeness produce very different aromas. At the start of ripening, notes of boxwood, paprika and elderberry can be recognized. As soon as the fruits ripen, aromas of passion fruit and gooseberry develop. When the grapes reach the overripe stage, you can taste the melon.

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay grape ripens early and can withstand heat and cold. Still wines and sparkling wines such as champagne are made from the grape. Chardonnay is related to the Burgundy and champagne grape Pinot Blanc, but has a completely different taste. Because this grape variety is planted all over the world, the flavors of the wine can also vary considerably. In regions with a cool climate, wines taste more like fresh green apple. During the production of the wine, after the so-called malolactic fermentation, most of the malic acid smelling of these green apples is converted into the milder lactic acid. In regions with a milder climate, the wine often has the taste of melon. In the warm regions, exotic fruits such as pineapple and mango can be recognized much more often. Chardonnay can have a high alcohol percentage, which can make it lean towards the sweet. A well-made chardonnay will have a long finish.

Pinot gris or Pinot grigio

The fruits of this grape variety naturally have a lot of sugar and relatively little acidity. For this reason it is preferably grown in cooler regions. In warm regions, boring sweet wines often arise. The skins contain little coloring, so that the wines can be white or at most rosé-colored. In cool areas, the growth of the grapes is not always without problems. The pinot gris has compact trusses, which makes the species vulnerable to rotting, especially if rainwater is trapped between the fruits. Autumn rains are therefore feared by the growers of pinot gris, with the result that many pick the grape rather early. The grapes have not yet been able to develop fully aromatically, with neutral, bland wines as a result. Most pinot grigio wines from Italy meet this profile. In Alsace, the grape is preferred to be harvested as late as possible as vendange tardive. Hence, this variety from that area often has a mild to sweet taste. Dry variants are also made.
