Description
One of the main focuses of Romaneira's owner and Bordeaux man Christian Seely is showing that the Douro has more to offer than great Port Wines. The ultimate terroir can also produce top quality still wines, which are not inferior to wines from, for example, Bordeaux, Bourgogne or the Rhône.
The domain therefore makes an extensive selection of impressive red wines. This beautiful wine is made from touriga nacional, the quality grape of the Douro, plus a little bit of touriga franca. Both varieties are picked in steep grade A slope vineyards with schist soils.
Once harvested, winemaker Carlos Agrellos ferments the grapes in stainless steel tanks for eight days. He then ages the wine in partly new and partly used French oak wooden barrels. This ensures that the oak tones merge nicely with the fruit and do not dominate.
The result is an impressive red Douro with a lot of finesse and depth. The wine combines a refined scent of violets, ripe dark fruit and vanilla with a powerful structure and a long finish. The beautiful freshness and supple tannins are striking, which makes the wine deliciously drinkable after some aeration in a carafe. Nice with a nice piece of grilled red meat or matured, hard cheese.
