Information
Quinta do Crasto Douro Castrum
Full red in color with light purple nuances; fresh fruity scent with red berries and cherries in the aroma. The taste is smooth and round with light, ripe tannins in the aftertaste. Great with meat or chicken dishes from the grill or from the oven, also excellent with pizza or pasta.
Red wine from the Douro Portugal
The Douro may be especially famous for its fortified port wines, but it also makes great whites and reds. The centuries-old family domain Quinta do Crasto is one of those domains that not only has an excellent reputation for the traditional port, but also for their still wines. Their Vinha Maria Teresa is truly world famous, and even more expensive than most Vintage Ports.
Fortunately, the domain also makes delicious wines in the more affordable segment. The Castrum is a good example of this. It is a classic Douroblend, consisting of local grapes tinta barocca, tinta roriz, touriga franca and touriga nacional, harvested in various plots in the dizzyingly steep vineyards.
The wine barely undergoes wood maturation after fermentation - only 5% aged in wooden barrels for added complexity. This ensures that the Castrum is bursting with the recognizable dark fruit. Due to the firm structure - as befits a good Douro - this is the ideal wine with a piece of roasted meat.
