There are plenty of highlights in this range, including the chardonnays. As always, Ramey prefers a more Burgundian approach to aging, with a longer barrel time than typical California. ''
Hyde Vineyard Napa
The vineyard is located on the gently sloping slopes of the Carneros Appleation in Napa. The soils are clay and quite heavy. A layer 30 centimeters deep provides an almost impenetrable substrate that limits the growth of the vines and yield. All nutrients are naturally distributed over a low number of grapes. High quality! The vineyard was planted in 1980 and 1999.
Vinous: 94/100 points
The 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is bold and racy. Orange peel, mint, tropical fruit and spice all flesh out effortlessly. The 2017 shows all of the creaminess and density that is such a signature of Hyde Chardonnays. Although the 2017 is quite expressive today, my sense is that it will be even better with more time in bottle.
