Syrah with a little bit of viognier | |
From small family domain Niéro |
Domaine Niero, Syrah & Viognier
Youthful, full red hue and a lovely aroma with ripe fruit notes of blackberries, mild spices and some pepper. The taste is full, elegant and smooth with ripe, soft tannins in the aftertaste.
Rhône Vin Rouge
This domain may be small in area with only 6 hectares, but it is absolutely great in quality. The Niéro family owns vineyards in two of the most prestigious appellations of the Northern Rhône: Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie. Here, on the steep terraced slopes of the Rhône, they grow their Viognier and Syrah organically.
Côte Rôtie is actually by definition an exclusive wine. The vineyards are among the steepest in Europe and can only be worked by hand. Production is very small. The appellation is exclusively for red wine, which is made from syrah. It is allowed to add up to 20% white viognier grapes. This is mainly done to refine the aroma and taste.
The Eminence is one of the most beautiful Côte-Rôtie's in the domain. It is a classic blend of mostly syrah with a little bit of viognier. The story goes that good Côte Rôtie must contain grapes from both the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde. This is indeed the case here, with grapes from the parcels of La Viallière (schist) and Bassenon (granite).
The style of the Eminence is classic and elegant with cherry and cassis fruit, floral notes, spices and a nice beauty. The wine is aged for fifteen months in oak barrels, of which a small part is new for beautiful soft, rounded tannins. A great, complex red wine to drink with spicy meat dishes such as lamb, pheasant or côte de boeuf.

Vinous | Antonio Galloni - April 2020: 91/100 points | Juicy and energetic on the palate
Description
Brilliant violet. Lively red and blue fruit and floral qualities on the highly perfumed nose, along with hints of smoky minerals and bacon. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering appealingly sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that fan out and turn spicy on the back half. Finishes long and smooth, with velvety tannins coming in late.

Jancis Robinson - November 2018: 17/20 points | Vivid black fruit with a lovely bramble note to it
Description
Tasted blind. Vivid black fruit with a lovely bramble note to it, and a bit of scrubby herbal complexity too. Crunchy structure with fresh acid and good, persistent black fruit through to the finish. Has both the structure and concentration to develop well. By Richard Hemming MW.
