Description
Without a doubt, Marlborough, specialising in Sauvignon Blanc, is New Zealand's most famous wine region. On the North Island lies the warmer Hawke's Bay, on the Pacific coast. In the southern, coolest part of this, in Heretaunga, lie the 'dry farmed' vineyards where this particularly fine Chardonnay comes from.
The duo Smit & Sheth harvest by hand, press the whole bunches and ferment the grapes in small oak barrels. This is followed by the second fermentation and a ten-month maturation in wooden barrels. During this period the wine is delicately stirred (bâtonnage), resulting in a beautiful, creamy taste with mild acids and a long finish. Very Burgundian in character and very seductive.
