Description
Villota is the promising project of the Pérez Villota family. The family has four generations of experience in Rioja Alavesa, also known as the Côte d'Or of the Rioja region. After a long involvement in the famous Viñedos del Contino, the family decided to go on their own in 2013. In 2016 they bottled their first own wines.
The Selvanevada offers an excellent introduction to Villota's refined red Riojas. Carmen and her team harvest the tempranillo, graciano, garnacha and mazuelo in small crates in Villota's beautiful old vineyards on a bend of the Ebro River. The grapes are immediately selected in the vineyard for quality.
The relatively large proportion of quality grape Graciano in the blend is special. This ensures an energetic, juicy and spicy character. Once in the cellar, the grapes are crushed and the skins are soaked. The wine is then fermented in French oak barrels and matured for six months in the same barrels.
It results in a lively fresh, juicy Crianza-style Rioja, which can be drunk on many occasions. The eye-catching label also depicts the hundred-year-old holm oak on the Ebro, with two ladies from the time of the Marquis of Selvanevada. He once owned the meander in the river where Villota is now located, but gambling debts forced him to sell his estate. Wine with a story and very tasty too!
Drink at
Classic, Crianza-style Rioja with finely dosed oak aging. Perfect for enjoying solo, or to serve with spicy (meat) dishes from the grill.
Tasting note
Ruby red wine with a purple glow and a refined scent of red currant, cherry, plum, laurel and cedar. The taste is full and juicy with firm, round tannins and a nice freshness. Good flavor concentration with dark fruit and a medium finish with pepper and toast.
Shelf life
Ready to drink soon after bottling; shelf life until about 7-8 years after harvest.
