Description
The Schieferkristall is the Gutswein, or the calling card, of the famous Weingut Karthäuserhof in the Ruwer. This special estate – which was founded in 1335 by the Carthusian monks – can boast a long history of making Riesling. With master winemaker Mathieu Kauffmann at the helm (the former chef de cave of Bollinger Champagne and Reichsrat von Buhl), it also has a bright future ahead of it.
The grapes for the Schieferkristall come partly from the small, steep monopole vineyard Karthäuserhofberg - which is being converted to organic cultivation. The rest of the grapes come from neighboring plots. After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and fermentation follows using the grape's own yeasts. The wine then matures for several months on fine yeasts in stainless steel tanks.
And that produces a beautifully pure, crystal-clear Riesling, with notes of white flowers, peach, grapefruit and green herbs. You can taste Mathieu's signature in the beautiful balance between the freshness and lightness so typical of Ruwer and the beautiful ripe fruit. A very nice introduction to one of the oldest wine estates in the world!
