Côtes du Rhône

In total there are 171 villages where Côtes du Rhône can be made.

Of the 171 villages, Côtes du Rhône Villages can be made in 95 villages (but without the name of the municipality on the label).

As of 2020, a Côtes du Rhône Villages with a municipality name may be made in 21 municipalities (in addition to a general appeal AOP Côtes du Rhône-Villages of wine from one of the 95 villages), for example Côtes du Rhône Villages Carianne. Because of their own specific character, 18 municipalities are allowed to put their municipality name on the label. In Drôme, there are 5 municipalities: Rochegude, Rousset Les Vignes, Saint-Andéol, Saint Maurice and Saint Pantaléon les Vignes.

In Vaucluse 13 municipalities: Cairanna, Gadagne, Massif d'Uchaux, Plan de Dieu, Puyméras, Roaix, Sablet, Sainte-Cécile, Séguret, Suze-la-Rousse, Vaison-la-Romaine, Valréas and Visan.

In the Gard 4 municipalities: Chusclan, Laudun, Saint Gervais and Signargues. These are the 18 Côtes du Rhône Villages with appellation in the name of the municipality.

The top wines (cru) come from a small area or one municipality. The best known from the Rhône are perhaps Châteauneuf-du-Pape (in the southern Rhône) and Hermitage (in the northern Rhône). The Rhône has a total of 16 such municipal appeals (AOPs), 8 in the north and 8 in the south. More on this later.

In addition there are two separate appeals for vin doux naturel. These are: AOC Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise & AOC Rasteau.

An overview of all Rhône appellations (it differs per appellation which wine may be made, this is also indicated below: red = R, rosé = R, white = W, dessert / vin doux naturel = D , and sparkling = M:
