Petit Verdot & Syrah blend

Diep robijnrode wijn met een complexe geur van rijp rood fruit (kers, pruim) aangevuld met specerijen (zwarte peper, vanille). De smaak is vol en uitgesproken met een mooie balans tussen zwoel rijp fruit, fraîcheur en een krachtige structuur. De afdronk is intens en lang.

Il Toro Toscane

Dat behalve sangiovese ook Franse druiven het uitmuntend doen in Toscane is inmiddels bewezen. Het beroemdst om z’n wijnen van Franse druivenrassen is de aan de kust gelegen regio Bolgheri. Maar ook Filippo Chia van het befaamde Brunello-huis Castello Romitorio maakt een hemelbestormende Super Tuscan. 

Dat doet Chia niet in Montalcino, waar hij zijn veelgeprezen Brunello’s maakt, maar in Scansano, waar Romitorio een tweede domein bezit. Niet ver van een Etruskische nederzetting en op een steenworp afstand van de kust teelt hij behalve sangiovese ook syrah en petit verdot.

Eenmaal perfect rijp oogst Chia de druiven met de hand. Voor én na het ontstelen worden de druiven ook nog eens handmatig gecontroleerd, zodat alleen het beste fruit in de wijn terecht komt. Na de vergisting rijpt de wijn nog een jaar in eikenhouten vaten.

Het eindresultaat is simpelweg verbluffend: de peperigheid en het intense kersenfruit van de syrah combineren prachtig met de geurigheid, structuur en het bramenfruit van de petit verdot. Een krachtige, gespierde en luxe rode wijn, die toch ook de onmiskenbare Toscaanse elegantie bezit. Drink deze Toro bij een mooie steak en het feest is compleet!

The 2018 Romitorio Toscana is fresh and lifted on the nose – unexpectedly so, showing smoky cherry and citrus-tinged blackberry with savory herbs. On the palate, silky textures contrast spicy raspberry fruit, as saline-minerals and zesty acids add grip under an air of inner violet florals. The finish is long, showing saturating red berry tones and hints of youthful tannin. This blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot is already rocking, yet a few years of cellaring should reveal even further depths.

The previous vintage of this wine carried the name Il Toro, but the wine has been renamed with this vintage. In archaic Italian, the name RomiTorò translates as Romitorio. The Castello Romitorio 2018 RomiTòro is made with equal parts Syrah and Petit Verdot, all aged in oak for 10 months. This edition opens to an inky dark appearance followed by a thick and succulent texture. It offers a certain firmness to the tannins and a thinner spot on the mid-palate that thickens quickly as the wine hits the palate. Dark plum, prune and blackberry emerge at the top. Lighter notes of spice, smoke and tar also appear. Pair this wine with your favorite steak dinner. Some 44,437 bottles were made. The wine was bottled in December 2019 and hits the market in February 2020. RomiTòro is one of the great value wines to emerge from Tuscany.

Softer aromas of sweet fruit cede quickly to tar, grilled herb and rich plum. Pair this wine with grilled T-bone steak.
